Fluorescence Microscopy

The ability to follow real time changes in physiology and biochemistry within a cell can have great advantages in understanding biological systems. Improvements in the chemistry of fluorescent probes have enabled the study of increasing numbers of physiologically relevant molecules.

Our fluorescent imaging system is currently configured for the detection of changes in intracellular calcium using Fura based dyes and voltage sensitive dyes, but has the flexibility to perform investigations utilising other fluorescent probes.

Capability

  • Fura-2 ratiometric imaging of intracellular calcium
  • Ratiometric imaging of cell membrane potential using voltage sensitive dyes

Equipment

  • Olympus BX41M fluorescence microscope with JVC video capture suite and Image proplus software
  • Olympus BX51WI fluorescence microscope with Andor iXon EMCCD camera and Andor IQ software

Example

Characterisation of cell interactions with a
topographically modified surface.
